As Coldplay fans get set to experience at least one of four shows in Toronto this week, there are a few tips you should know before attending the new .
Concert organizer LiveNation has made some improvements for this week’s shows — including more water stations, specific gate entrances for Rogers and VIP customers, and closing a part of Wilson Avenue for crowd control.
And it’s supposed to be warm this week, with some scattered showers, but not much precipitation in the forecast for all of Ontario.
Located at the former Downsview Airport grounds in North York, the temporary outdoor venue has capacity for 50,000 fans — slightly more than the 39,150 capacity at the Rogers Centre downtown, where the Blue Jays play.
The first concert was already held at the venue, Stray Kids on June 29 — and fans attending the K-pop show had plenty to say about it.
Fan feedback
“Getting there by TTC was easy,â€Â . “You took the train to Downsview station, and there were signs leading you there. It is quite a bit of a walk.â€
The concert itself was good, and washrooms were found outside and inside the venue, the post said.
“If you needed to refill your water bottle, there were only three stations that I could find. The shortest line was by the first aid station,†hijau said in the post.
The concert area itself is huge, and fans sitting on the east side should be prepared to have the sun in your face until sunset. The west side of the venue was in full shade.
Bring a hat and sun glasses if you’re on the east side
“The stage itself faced the sun, so the performers also had the sun in their eyes until it set. Bring a fan, hat and sunglasses if you’re on the east side,†the Reddit poster went on to say.
Live Nation told the Toronto Star in a statement that additional shaded areas are being added for future events.
And there was a bit of a motion if you were in the bleachers, which swayed as the audience moved to the music.
But getting home was another story.
“From section 105 to the GO stop: one hour. Everyone went through Gate 1. That’s 50,000 people leaving at the same time. Don’t forget, there was that 20 mins walk. They basically bottlenecked,†according to the Reddit post.
LiveNation addressing concerns
But concert organizer LiveNation has listened to similar feedback from other Stray Kids fans who experienced the venue for the first time, and is making adjustments.
“As you prepare to leave the venue — please stay safe, follow directions from event staff, and look out for each other,†Rogers Stadium shared in a Facebook post.
The company noted stadium exit routes were being reconfigured to “create smoother flow†and disperse the crowd to all three nearby subway stations.
And as for the stands swaying, the company is aware of the feeling, and noted the grandstand has been inspected and exceed international safety codes.
Crowd safety
When out in a larger size crowd, there are some general safety guidelines to observe, York University associate professor of disaster and emergency management Jack Rozdilsky said in an earlier interview when Taylor Swift was in town.
Rozdilsky recommends people are generally aware of things happening around you. If you see something happening that seems off or wrong, alert someone in a position of authority.
“Chances are, if you see something that doesn’t seem right, it isn’t right,†he said. “The way safety usually works in crowds, this is if everyone is kind of paying attention to everyone else and everyone has a set of eyes, hopefully, if something is going in the wrong direction, it could be stopped before it gets too bad.â€
If you’re in a large crowd of people being pushed or thrust in a direction and you’re uncomfortable, try to do something about it — move somewhere else, if possible, or move away from the location. Be aware of where you are and where you’re moving to avoid injury and remain aware of people near you.
Going into a large stadium — especially for the first time — can be confusing and overwhelming.
Rozdilsky advises people to slow down, take a look around and find where the exits are.
