Do you love local food and community advocacy?
You can support Food Day Canada, an initiative founded in Elora, by attending Elora’s Longest Barbecue.
The event is set for Tuesday, July 29 with a rain date of Wednesday, July 30, from 4 to 9 p.m., on West Mill Street and the pedestrian bridge in downtown Elora.
Food Day Canada was the inspiration of author, food laureate and culinary activist Anita Stewart, read a press release. It’s a grassroots movement to encourage folks across the country to shop, cook and dine on Canadian food. It’s all about our farmers, fishers, chefs and researchers as well as home cooks.
Elora’s Longest Barbecue is the kickoff event and includes cuisine from more than 20 local restaurants. Last year the barbecue drew more than 7,500 guests to the downtown for food and festivities. It’s an all-ages event with no admission charge.
“This event captures the essence of Food Day Canada,†said Jeff Stewart, executive director, in a statement. It’s about celebrating Canadian ingredients, the people who grow, harvest and prepare them and the joy of gathering at a shared table. Elora’s Longest Barbecue will be a feast for the senses and the community spirit.â€
Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event, but you can get tickets online in advance.
There will be Ontario wine, beer and cider, live music and family-friendly activities.
“We’re thrilled to help organize what has truly become an iconic event,†said Jocelyn Maurice, managing partner at Elora Mill. “Elora’s Longest Barbecue is a celebration of everything we love about our community, hospitality, local food and unforgettable experiences. We look forward to welcoming 1,000s of guests to Elora, now firmly on the map as a must-visit Canadian culinary destination.â€
The event reflects on a deep connection to the Grand River Agricultural Society and Egg Farmers of Ontario, who they said strengthen the community through agriculture, sustainability and education.
Food Day Canada is set for Aug. 2 and people can take part in different ways. Promote the growth and study of distinctively Canadian food and share on social media with #FoodDayCanada to show support for local food.
