Provincial offences court impose a $350,000 fine against Linamar Corporation in öÏÓãÊÓƵapp. A worker was critically injured at its Independence Place facility.
öÏÓãÊÓƵapp’s Linamar Corporation was fined $350,000 last month after an employee was “critically injured†when hit by a 460-pound tool.
Provincial offences court heard the incident occurred on June 30, 2023, when an acting supervisor directed a worker to perform a broach stick tool change at the company’s facility at 32 Independence Pl.
A broach stick is a tool used in precision machining to remove material from a workpiece. It typically consists of a long, toothed bar that progressively cuts into the material as it passes through or along it.

Court heard the worker used a jib crane equipped with clamping attachments to insert and remove sticks from a broaching machine. The broach stick fell from the crane and struck the worker, which resulted in the injury.
An investigation by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development identified several contributing factors in the incident.

One key issue, the investigation revealed, was the crane controls were not functioning as designed by the manufacturer. It allowed the crane to lift a broach stick that was only partially engaged and compromised the secure handling of the stick.
Linamar pleaded guilty and was fined May 9 for failing to ensure the broach stick was lifted, carried or moved in a manner that did not endanger the safety of the worker, contrary to their obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
