Uber Canada is promising to make hailing a ride and getting around much easier for older adults.
In an announcement shared on Monday, the ride-hailing giant said the company is launching their new “Senior Accounts,†which promises to be a “simpler Uber experience designed for older adults.â€
Options to set up Uber “Senior Accountsâ€
“Senior Accounts†can be accessed as part of Uber’s “Family Profiles†feature. This allows loved ones to help set up an account and extend support when needed.
Uber’s “Family Profile†feature lets users share Uber accounts with family members by adding them to the user’s Uber account.Â
For older adults who want control over their own accounts and prefer to ride independently, Uber is introducing “Simple Mode,†which offers the same experience as a “Senior Account†— but without the requirement to connect to a “Family Profile.â€
How to set up the “Senior Account†using a Family Profile
Setting up the Senior Account through Uber’s Family Profile is recommended for older adults who need more assistance. In the Uber app, a loved one can invite the older adult to join their Family Profile.
To do this, launch the Uber app on mobile, then tap the account icon on the bottom right corner of the screen. Then scroll down and tap family and then click “Add new member.â€
An invitation will be sent to the older adult usually via text message. They will be prompted to download the app and create their account if they don’t have it on their phone yet.
How to set up Simple Mode for independent unassisted use
If the older adult prefers to use the app independently they can turn on “Simple Mode†on their app.
They can tap the account icon on the bottom right corner of the screen, then select “Settings,†then tap “Accessibility,†then tap “Simple Mode.†Once on the Simple Mode screen, they can toggle “Turn on simplified version of the app.â€
Uber Senior Account’s Key Features
The new account for older adults include features that are meant to make the experience easier and more streamlined. These include:
- Larger text, fewer buttons and easy-to-follow screens for a more simplified experience.
- The ability to store frequent destinations like home or the doctor’s office for quick access to frequently visited destinations through saved places.
- Flexible payment options that lets seniors pay with their own personal card or a family member’s card.
- Trip updates which let loved ones follow the older adult’s rides in real time and receive alerts in case of a delay in their estimated arrival to a location.
- The ability for loved ones to offer support by helping book rides for the senior account holder or contact the car’s driver.
