Taylor’s case garnered intense media coverage because of the shocking details surrounding the cause of the young woman’s death and the eventual charge and sentence Morin, her then boyfriend, received.
Following the assault on their way to a downtown Peterborough party in September 2020, Taylor went into seizures and was taken to hospital, where she was placed on life support.

Ultimately, she never regained consciousness and Taylor’s family removed her from life support about six months later.
The family wanted a stiffer sentence, advocating for second-degree murder or manslaughter; however, Morin would instead be convicted of aggravated assault endangering life.

The lack of a homicide charge hinged on the fact that the pathologist couldn’t say for certain that she’d died as a result of his attack or alcohol or cocaine use, the court heard.
Morin eventually took a plea deal, admitting he choked Taylor, but claiming the head trauma was the result of her falling and hitting her head.
He was sentenced to four years, which resulted in him serving 550 days in prison after receiving credit for time served of 850 days after his conviction in February 2024.
Shingoose, 46, of Hastings, lived with Taylor in the community and spoke about the anger she feels toward Morin and the justice system she believes cheated Taylor out of a fair sentence.
“It’s so gross, it’s disgusting, it’s so unjust.†said Shingoose. “I feel a lot of rage, I don’t think he should be out and I’m scared for the vulnerable woman and girls.â€

Nahanni says Taylor’s death is part of an ongoing “genocide†of Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
“This is the legacy of our women, it’s still happening,†she added. “It’s debilitating.â€
She’s of the opinion the judge should have taken matters into her own hands and handed Morin a higher sentence, despite the Crown and defence agreeing that four years was appropriate.
Fighting back tears, she talked about the type of person Taylor was — very small in stature, but huge in positive energy.
“I know when people pass away, everyone says lots of kind things about them, especially kids,†she added, “but she was literally the best. She was pure light, kind and had the cutest giggle. She was so full of life, she lit up the room everywhere she went.â€
Jordan Morin choked Taylor to the point of consciousness, before the the 22-year-old fell and hit her head in the fall of 2020.
Morin has a long history of alleged violence, such as being charged for disfiguring a man after the individual stepped in to protect a woman he saw being beaten by another male on a Peterborough street.

Morin, who a court heard suffers from fetal-alcohol syndrome, was also charged with physical abuse against another girlfriend.
While he was eventually found not guilty in that case, the judge told the court he did believe “there was likely a physical altercation†between Morin and the woman.
Morin is also well-known for flouting his bail, with many of his charges having come while on conditional release, including those on Taylor.
Morin is out on statutory release, months after the parole board had rejected his previously attempted release.
The board said he had a sawed-off shotgun on him and several other weapons in proximity during the index offences.
There were allegations of multiple incidents, including an assault — while on drugs — on another inmate, while in a maximum-security prison.
Finally, the board detailed how during a “one-chanceâ€Â statutory release, Morin went “UALâ€Â — unlawfully at large.

“You have demonstrated a propensity for violence given your criminal history and the number of violent and weapon-related offences,†the parole board wrote in its decision to keep Morin locked up in 2024.
Part of Morin’s probation after release includes stipulations that he not contact Shingoose and a number of others, does not possess weapons or go to Curve Lake.
Morin must also attend anger management and substance abuse counselling.
